Alternate Color Wheels

All this surgery stuff is getting me down, so this morning I tried to lift my spirits with some color mixing. I pulled out my tubes of Azurite Hue, Indian Yellow Hue, and Alizarin Crimson Hue (Golden acrylic paints) and mixed up a color wheel. The colors were indeed lovely, and very different from the vivid, clear colors created when using Pthalo Blue (Green Shade), Hansa Yellow Medium, and Quinacridone Magenta as primaries. I can really see times when I'd like to use this alternative palette.

I did another color wheel using Cobalt Teal, Titanate Yellow, and Light Magenta (actually, I mixed up the third myself rather than buying it in a tube). This created a pastel wheel that had a definite 50s feel to it, as I had intended. Now, I suppose that if I had just added Titanium White to the standard primaries, I'd get the same thing, but this was fun.

Emboldened by my color mixing success, I decided to paint some notebook covers. I had gone on a gesso frenzy earlier in the week, preparing board books, book covers, journal covers, and other objects for later painting. So, I pulled out the notebook covers (the sturdy kind that come off a wire-bound notebook) and started to paint the first set.

Okay, let's cut to the chase and say it didn't go well. Imagine if you were walking down the street and stepped in bronze dog poop. As you do. Let's say that in your effort to scrape it off your shoe, all you could find was a notebook cover lying on the ground. So, you wiped your shoe onto that. Repeatedly.

Right, okay. That's what my cover looks like. Ew; time for more gesso!

I also tried to paint another cover with paisley and swirl designs. I mixed up some really pretty colors but...even after drawing the design, I can't paint within the lines! I suck at it. It came out awful; not at all as I intended. I definitely need masking tape, templates, rulers, or stamps to save the day. Or lessons in brush work. But for now: MORE GESSO.

Oh, well, at least I have the color wheels done!

P.S. I received an automated call from UCSF this evening to confirm my surgeon appointment for next Wednesday. Um, that's the appointment that her assistant said she'd cancel because the plans changed. Is it back on? Did she just forget to cancel it? I DON'T KNOW! I confirmed it anyway, just in case.
