"And They Didn't Even Know It Was Spring..."
Today was a good day for bird-watching, if bird watching means opening the drapes and looking outside. A new dove is brooding on a nest at No. 1, while Kelly and Ryan Flibberdegibbet (the Finches) are excitedly feeding their new babies at No. 5.
Ryan has turned out to be a very interactive dad, which is a good thing, because these babies are HUNGRY! I honestly think the Finches spent most the day finding food and feeding the babies. I saw Ryan fly over at one point to put the food right into Kelly's mouth so she could prep it for the kids. She chirped something like, "More! We need more!" Another time he fed them while she hunted for more.
The dove--this one seems rather sweet--looked a bit forelorn on her nest. Her mate never stopped by to see her, the poor dear.
Meanwhile, in the backyard, the fence lizards were a step behind in the Spring Fever festivities, apparently not even having mated yet. A male lizard was excitedly chasing a female around the hot tub, pausing only to do manly push-ups designed to display his awesome prowess. She was having none of his flirtatious ways, however. I'm thinkin' she has her eye on some other cold-blooded stud, though this one seemed to feel it was only a matter of time before she tired out and became his. I've known guys like that!
With all this Spring fertility imagery around me, I'm reminded of a story I wrote for my school paper when I was just seven years old. It was about that ultimate of fertility symbols, the Easter Bunny. Reading it now, I'm not sure what kind of seven-year old I was! No, it doesn't involve birds or mating, but still, it is a bit surreal. I offer it up for your enjoyment:
"The Spiderweb" - Spring 1973 - Room 6
The Mystery of the Missing Bunny
"Today is April 15th" said Susan to her little brother Tim when he was in bed. Tim jumped up. "It’s Easter!” he shouted. Susan said "Sh! We don’t want to wake up mom and dad". As they went downstairs, "The bunny has not come," said Tim as he looked at the untouched baskets. There was only one egg on the floor, no jellybeans hidden, no flowers blooming. Then they heard a sound. It was the Easter bunny. He said, "My cottontail got caught in these blossoms again” and Susan and Tim came running. "What is the matter?" Susan said to the bunny. The bunny said, "My treasures are caught and I am too".
Then Susan took a knife out of her pocket and cut the stem of the blossom and they didn’t even know it was spring.
Kathy laughs at this and says, "See? Even in second grade, you loved your knives!" I'm more curious by what "and they didn't even know it was spring" actually means. Good to know that I was also obsessed with treasure at a young age. Maybe we don't really change much when we grow up. Or pretend to grow up.
No matter. Go off and enjoy all that nature has to offer!
