Artistic Composition: Just One Rule?
As evidenced by our recent focus on color-mixing, Kathy and I have been trying to strengthen our core competencies, so to speak, in art. Along with color, we've been wanting to learn more about composition and design. We signed up for a class on composition and design in January, but it was cancelled. So, we decided we have to learn about it in other ways.
This evening Kathy showed me a composition book online. "Do we have this book?" she asked.
"No," I answered. "We have another book..."
At the same time she brought up the very same book I was about to show her. It's called, The Simple Secret to Better Painting: How to Immediately Improve Your Work with the One Rule of Composition by Greg Abert.
"We need the easiest one," she said.
"The simple secret!" I thought about it some more and said, "I think they need to present these on DVD. You know, show paintings and then do overlays that shows the composition lines so we can see it."
She agreed immediately. "Yes, it's is easier not to read...its easier to watch."
"They could do it as a Flash movie, even. Lots of pretty moving pictures."
Kathy focused on the task at hand. "I think we should order the one rule book...it sounds easier. It just has one rule."
"I have it in the studio. ONE RULE. I can bring it upstairs." I paused for a moment. "Are you trying to give me blog material?"
She shook her head. "One can't force blog material. It has to blogout naturally. By the way, that is one rule..."
I'll let you know how the one rule system goes.
