Behind the Orange Curtain
Last night on "Justice," the new TV show staring Victor Garber (SpyDaddy from "Alias"), they did a thing on Los Angeles vs. Orange County. The show is about a high-profile L.A. law firm and Victor Garber plays Ron Trott, the media-savvy lead attorney. Okay, I don't think they call him the lead attorney, but I can't remember the term right now.
Anyway, in last night's episode, a case for a client they were defending was going to be tried in Orange County. Ron wanted to try it as first chair, but his partner Luther advised against it, because it's Orange County, not L.A.
Ron Trott: Orange County is 35 miles from here, Tom. Are you telling me I don't know how to win a case because the courtroom is 35 miles away?
Luther Graves: Orange County is more like 1,000 miles away.
Then they did this stylistic montage showing the demographic differences of Los Angeles vs. Orange County. You know, they show a young, hip and funky couple for L.A. and a conservative, straight-laced couple for Orange County and...okay, already I can't remember the details.
However, I do remember that I was cracking up because that could just as well been San Francisco vs. central Contra Costa County, where I now live. I mean, UCSF is exactly 35 miles away (my old flat was 30 miles) but it may as well be across the state given the demographic differences. People in Concord are more conservative, drive SUVs full of kids on their way to swim team, and go to church on Sunday. In San Francisco, people experiment with how they look, they take a lot of public transit, and on Sunday they might be at a political rally, preparing a performance art piece, or starting a gourmet recipe in their kitchen for tonight's dinner party.
After so long in San Francisco, you would think that Concord was a shock to my system, but I am okay with the change. I am who I am no matter what my surroundings are. And besides, free parking and open space make up for a multitude of strange behaviors.
Now, where IS my blue wig?
