A Box-full of Meditation and Domestic Divination

UPS delivered an Amazon.com order that had two cool things inside.

The first is a book/CD combo called Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: A Guide of Mind-Body Techniques by Peggy Huddleston. Peggy did a lot of research on the factors that lead to optimal healing after surgery and presents them in the book. The CD contains a meditation that helps you stay in a positive healing place. There are specific things that your body needs to do after surgery to properly recover from general anesthesia, so some of this looks to be very specific.

The idea is that you listen to the CD regularly before surgery and you can also take it into surgery with you. I'm going to bring a CD player in the O.R. to do just that. Right after I ordered the book, I found out that someone at UCSF teaches classes based on Peggy Huddleston's work, so they must find it to be useful.

Star, Devil, and Ace of Wands tarot cards

The second has absolutely nothing to do with surgery or cancer-yay! It's a Tarot deck that I had been eyeing called The Housewives Tarot: A Domestic Divination Kit. It wasn't until Kathy spotted it, too that I decided we absolutely had to have it. It comes in a "recipe box" with card dividers. All of the cards have retro-style housewife graphics. The ace of wands is a feather duster. The Star features a woman proudly holding her blue ribbon cherry pie. The devil, my favorite card in this deck, is a devil's food cake with a woman's arms and legs, holding a cigarette in one hand and a cocktail in the other. Who could resist?

It sounds very silly, I know, especially with suggestions for Tarot spreads with names like The Clothesline of Life and The Martini. But after reading through the descriptions, I think it's spot-on and rather inspired. Who would have thunk it? Well, Paul Kepple and Jude Buffum did, so, cheers to you guys!
