Aqua Purple, Dancing Warrior, is in Town!

Because the lavender wig that I received a month ago was too difficult to work with (it tangled when you looked at it and shed like a tree in late fall) I ordered a different lavender wig to use for my next chemo outfit. This is what it looks like:

Lavender page boy wig with a funky basketweave part

It recently arrived and it is wonderful. The fiber is much better than the other one. It has a good weight, so it hangs well. That part is awesome, too. I tried it on with the big purple glasses and it's perfect. The unicorn T-shirt will just set it over the top. Ha!

The wig manufacturer (in Hong Kong) calls this color Aqua Purple. Uh....okay. Personally, I think "Aqua Purple" sounds like a dancer...or maybe a fighter! An anime character is taking form in my head.

I wore this wig when I went to Rockridge today and then to Target in Walnut Creek. In Rockridge (part of Oakland next to Berkeley) lavender hair is no big deal. But at Target, people were a little weird.

As I walked through Target and other shoppers tried to find anywhere to look other than at me, a little girl behind me shouted, "Mommy, look at the lady's hair! Look at the lady's hair!" I could almost feel her mother's mortification like a physical thing. I managed not to crack up. Kids in the 12-15 year age range just stare at me somberly. The cashier couldn't look at me until the very end of the transaction when I wished her a good day, and then her expression was surprised. Are people with lavender hair assumed to be unfriendly?

I suppose, having lived for almost 10 years in San Francisco, I have a different idea of what's weird. I don't see what the big deal was. I adore this wig; it's my absolute favorite. It's comfortable to wear, too, so I'm putting this into frequent rotation. Maybe Target was a fluke and next time people will be more normal. We'll see.
