Cat Crack

Kathy's youngest boy, Skeeter (he's the one with the dove fetish) is hooked on something bizarre: the disc tray on the DVD player. Apparently, it is a form of cat crack and he will do anything to make us eject the tray.

We used to laugh when we would eject the tray to put a movie on and Skee would run from some distant corner of the house to watch it go back inside. He'd then sit expectantly in front of the DVD player, waiting for it to come out again.

We started hitting the eject button recreationally, just to watch his reaction. Sometimes he'd swoop in really fast to "catch" it, and I'd scramble to hit the button again to make the tray retract. I'm pretty sure that having a 15 lb cat (or however big he is now) hanging off a tray is not good for the DVD player.

A little while after that, I began ejecting the tray to distract Skee from certain behavior. When Kathy is sitting on the sofa, Skee likes to climb on her chest and make her hold him up while he purrs and nuzzles her neck. Sounds sweet, doesn't it? Only...Skee has no concept of how much he has grown since kittenhood. He's now quite the strapping boy. Kathy is very tolerant of this and it's okay when he does this after dinner, but sometimes he gets antsy and insists on climbing over her shoulder while she's still eating. That's when the DVD player came in handy, because that is the one thing that will make him leave her alone.

Ginger tabby looks over his shoulder expectantly

What I didn't realize is that at this point, Skee was training us. He'd walk along the sofa toward Kathy in that "I'm going to climb on her!" way, waiting for me to grab the remote. We noticed that he would glance from me to the DVD player, as if to say, "You're going to do it, right? Do the thing! Do the thing!"

Last night, this became a little crazy. We were done with dinner, so it was okay if he climbed on Kathy to cuddle. But while Skee kept climbing on her and then getting off immediately. I caught him looking over at me, clearly wanting me to grab the remote to stop him. "Didja see, didja see? I'm getting on mom! Don't you want to distract me with something?" I did not indulge him. After a bit, he gave up, settled down on his mom, and licked her arm.

Sigh. All I can say is, cats are lucky are so damn cute.
