As Time Goes By

Lately I've become quite addicted to As Time Goes By, a 1990s British sitcom staring Judi Dench (Dame Judi!) and Geoffrey Palmer. BBC America is rerunning it from the beginning, so I'm TiVoing it to ensure that don't miss an episode.

The premise of As Time Goes By is simple. A young man and young woman who originally met in the 50s, fell madly in love, and were separated both by the Korean War and misunderstandings, meet 38 years later. He has been married and divorced and had his adventures in Kenya. She is widowed, running a secretarial agency, with her adult daughter living with her. Despite their resistance, old fires are rekindled. But everything is more complicated now that they have had many different life experiences and are weighing the attraction of blushing love against the security that independence brings.

What I love most about it is how gentle yet honest the show is, while still being downright funny. It is what I want a British sitcom to be, only few are like this now. It feels like the perfect "curl up with a cup of tea and a throw" kind of program. It goes without saying that the acting is top-notch. Judi Dench can make anything sound interesting or naughty. And I really love that this show centers around older people falling in love, because we certainly don't see enough of that portrayed on TV.

If you haven't seen As Time Goes By, check it out. BBC America is airing it now, though I have seen it on PBS stations. Personally, I'm eyeing the DVD boxed set and the reunion special. What a fun show to have ready after a hard day out in the cruel world, don't you think? Just my kind of comfort TV.
