Destiny Awaits Us All

Do you remember those hidden image stereagram posters that they used to sell in mall kiosks? They looked like multicolored visual static-nothing distinct-but if you stared at one long enough, you'd see a three-dimensional image emerge after a while. Maybe it was an eagle or a landscape. I tend to think that the Universe sends us secret, encoded messages through our experiences in a similar way. If we unfocus our eyes and cock our heads to one side, we may just see something special that no one else can see. Sometimes these messages take us one step closer to our destiny.

While waiting to see a nurse today, I read the only thing I could find in the exam room: an old issue of Woman's Day. I opened it to a little article about an opera singer who, after caring for her terminally ill mother for a couple of years, was inspired to change her career. Having seen first hand the need for compassion in the medical industry, she wanted to add her own contribution. So, at age 50 she went back to school, completed her undergraduate work, and then went to nursing school. Today she's a registered nurse who sings part-time in a local choir.

This was a woman who saw the secret message meant just for her, recognized the sacred nature of it, and took action. You can be certain that she spent some time worrying about whether she was too old to change careers like that, especially given the educational requirements. But what's important is that she didn't let this stop her in her tracks.

I'll confess that one the things I love best about her story was that she started out as an opera singer. Not an office clerk or an insurance executive, but a glamorous singer. And she wanted to be a nurse! We expect to read about the reverse. Her journey shows that any job can be ideal for the right person and what fulfills you may change over your lifetime.

What secret messages are hiding around you? If you had decoder glasses on, what do you think you might find, just in your everyday life? What do you already know about that you are trying your best to ignore, telling yourself that you are way too old to start THAT?

Destiny awaits each and every one of us. Remember, in another year you will be one year older, whether you start taking steps toward your dream or not. How do you want to spend your time?
