Emergency Tire Drama
I don't know why, but I am tire-impaired. I unintentionally neglect my tires, procrastinating about filling them with air (in fear that I'll make them explode) and forgetting to check the tire tread regularly. I'm just plain lucky I've never had a blow-out.
Well, recently my car has started driving funny, kind of pulling to the left. Today I realized that it might be caused by the tire, so when I got home from radiation I took a look. As you might suspect, the tire closest to the driver's side looked low on air and had a weird bulge in the sidewall. Even I knew that wasn't right. Nervous, because I need the car to get me to radiation each day I called Goodyear to see if I could take the in. Then I pulled out my Goodyear warranty from getting my tires a few years back and drove to Walnut Creek.
The guy who looked at my car pointed out a second bulge in the same tire and confirmed that it has to be replaced. He said he couldn't promise that it would be safe to drive it another day, so I agreed to leave it with him. When we went inside to talk tires, I found out that they've discontinued my cool-looking AquaTred tires. I picked out a new style, but then it turned out that they couldn't get a tire in the size I need until tomorrow afternoon.
With a radiation appointment 20 miles away at noon, I couldn't figure out what I was going to do. My family is over 60 miles away and my friends are scattered outside the area. Still recovering from chemo, I don't have the stamina to walk the half-mile uphill to get from the nearest bus to my house! But since they were giving me a discount for the tire as it was under warranty, I left the car with them.
It all worked out, as Kathy called on her way home to tell me that she made arrangements so she can drive me tomorrow. Whew! But, you know, I think it's time that I start making a few friends who live closer to home. I bet they are good for all sorts of things like, oh, I don't know...lunch dates and impromptu meetings at the bookstore, what-have-you. I've heard about that kind of thing. I'll have to look into it.
