The Finches at No. 5

Two finches have started building a nest in the eaves outside our living room window, four eaves down from the dove in her nest. The young couple are energetic and excited. They've made remarkable progress in a single day, creating an admirably stylish yet structurally sound nest, even sporting colorful green grass. If you listen close, you can here the female. I think her conversation translates to something like this:

"Omigod, omigod, omigod! This is so awesome! We're building a home and it's going to be the coolest ever! We're going to have BABIES! Lots of babies, right here, so we're building this nest! I put grass in it! Ryan's gone to get more twigs! My name's Kelly-are you having babies, too? Where's your mate? When we finish this nest, Ryan is going to stay with me and take care of the babies. Oh, gotta go, gotta get more stuff!"

The dove (who I named Fiona) is clearly unhappy about this. She keeps casting annoyed looks in the direction of Ryan and Kelly's new pad. It is bad enough that she has to be a mother in a dangerous neighborhood. Now some irresponsible and noisy finches move in right next door. She KNEW this place was no good!

Dash is very excited about the latest development. Finches are his specialty. He was chattering the feline "prey!" sound as he watched the Finches darting to and fro. Skee was transfixed by his dove. He can't see her babies yet, but I can. She is so disgruntled; I only hope she doesn't throw them out of the nest.

The fine-feathered drama continues.
