Guess Who Doesn't Have Cancer?

I don't!

My surgeon walked into the exam room today, speaking as she entered. "It was just as I thought - negative!" I smiled at her, so relieved. SO relieved.

She said that she hadn't thought it was anything to worry about in the first place. I asked, "If this kind of thing comes up again, do we wait longer before doing surgery?" I thought maybe next time we could track things for a few months before doing a biopsy.

"We are not doing this again," she said, adamantly. She told me how the radiologists had these new digital mammography machines and...she trailed off with a shake of her head. I think she was indicating that they were being a bit spastic, honestly. She humored them this time with the biopsy, but I can tell that if they raise the issue again with me on microcalcifications, she'll argue against a biopsy. That's fine with me.

The dressing on the biopsy site fell off this morning and I had a look at the incision. It wasn't gross or anything. What was evident was that she did the biopsy in the same place as the lumpectomy incision and did a bit of work in the area when she closed up. Before, thanks to my slow-healing breast, I had developed a noticeable indentation and circular scar at one end of the incision. Scar tissue had built up in that area and thickened during radiation. I was ready to live with the dimple in my breast, even though I didn't like it. But when you are trying to do self-exams, a mass of scar tissue be very distracting, because it feels like a lump.

Now, post biopsy, there is no dimple and no mass. I told her I saw that she had done some nice work and she smiled happily. She shrugged modestly and said that she just thought she'd do a little revision. Perhaps that was my bonus for suffering through this waiting process - almost like free plastic surgery!

I feel happy now and free. It's time to get on with things! I'm done with cancer. Blah!
