Hardheaded

The distinctive star-like tip of a Flair Hardhead pen capAs we sat down at at Starbucks, I reached in my handbag for my notepad and a pen to make a note for my blog. The pen I pulled out was a red felt tip, which I tested carefully on the notepad. It worked, but I had my doubts.

"I think 15 years might be too old for a pen," I mused.

Kathy raised an eyebrow. "You are kidding me, right?"

"Am not. Tell me, when did you last see a Hardhead Flair pen?" I asked pointedly, holding it out so she could take in the tell-tale starburst cap and the half-rubbed off lettering on the side.

She shook her head disbelievingly. "Sometimes, you scare me."

"Okay, so maybe it's 20 years old."

"What really scares me is that you must have a whole stash of old pens that you use every day or something."

"Not really. I have a little plastic drawer, below the one with the binder clips, and all the pens I gather up when I clean go in there. I misplaced the red pen you gave me for my editing and I needed another, so I opened the drawer and found this one." I smiled like I should get a gold star.

"Let me get this right," Kathy said slowly. "You lose my pens immediately, but your pens you keep for 20 years?!?"

My smile faded, then I pulled out my iPod Touch in a quick motion. "So, you said you could show me how the Starbucks WiFi works on the Touch?"

A flair pen secured in a third-arm vise with a magnifying glass over the logo

While looking at the displays at Starbucks on the same trip (and remember, I don't get out much) I saw the book Listening is An Act of Love.

Only, I read it as: Listening to An Act of Love.

All I could think was, woo-hoo -- racy! So, does it come as a CD set or an MP3 download? Can we specify the kind of love act, or is it a selection? No matter! Go, Starbucks ... bringing casual audio-porn into the twenty-first century!

Oh my gosh, I TOTALLY understand about the pens. I can only write with one kind, and I am OBSESSED about them. I hover over my students the entire time they're using one of my pens, to make sure they don't run off with them. I've scared them so much that now whenever they find one of those kind of pens they immediately bring it to me. Even if it is not actually mine, I have scared them into believing that Every Single Pen In The Entire Universe(of this kind) BELONGS TO ME! Mwa ha ha ha ha.

We are out of batteries on our camera or I would take a picture of my favorite pen in all creation....its a hardhear flair...in blue! It doesn't even write anymore but, for some reason...I can;t get rid of it. Ya know what? I am throwing it away now. In the trash...ta da...I am free!!!! I am cured.

Now where is my Papermate Expressions pencil with the blue polka dots? Hey...did someone take my favorite pencil in all creation? Hello? Anyone there?

Mon dieu! You...you...you threw it away! I am speechless!

I see it now: Jenny, Lynne, and Alix, Founders of the WIFL. That's the Writing Instrument Freedom League, pronounced Wiffle, of course. We shall...we shall...well first, we ought to sketch out some ideas. Who is bringing the pens?

I totally understand this pen thing! I used those pens for years & all of a sudden they stop making them!!! I write alot in my job & I write very hard,so this was the PERFECT pen for me. Wanted to write Papermate/Flair & see if they could help me out. Maybe they make them & only sell them in certain areas?

Well, I would suggest that you write to Papermate, but you can't! They stopped making your pen!

Email might work.

After writing this entry, I saw Papermate pens at Target that had some tacky variation of the Hardhead starburst (seriously, tacky...and the barrel was white). I should have seen if they were the equivalent of Hardheads, but I was shunning their whiteness. Anyway, check Target...what I saw was a multi-pack of a bunch of pens. GOOD LUCK!

I still have a box of the Flair Hardhead. I love that pen!
