I Owe Somebody a New Present
I went to lunch with my friend Sue yesterday, had a lovely time, and headed out afterwards to run errands. At Trader Joe's, I turned toward the display of Airborne (that stuff to ward off the cold and flu) and had an spooky feeling. I decided I didn't want to run any more errands and headed home. Two hours later I started coughing, out of nowhere, and I had a fever. Voila!
Alix, meet Mr. Flu.
Since then, my temperature has been all over the place. I've been coughing, aching, and generally feeling fussy. Kathy brought me an electric blanket to curl up with on the sofa. I decided to break into her Christmas presents and open up the Ann Baldwin DVD that I bought her. (I had her permission.) I watched it to keep me distracted from how badly I felt. Lola kept sitting tall on the cable box, prompting me to yell out, "Down in front!" but it turns out that even blocking part of the screen, she couldn't distract me from this DVD.
You see, Ann Baldwin is a fabulous collage artist who works in layers of paint, text, and images. You know, the stuff I love to do. I have admired her work for a long time. The DVD in question-by Creative Catalyst--shows Ann at an Art & Soul workshop, teaching students how to combine words and images for a narrative collage.
Well, omigod. I am IN LOVE with this DVD! It is everything I wanted to take the next step in my work. It's informative its entertaining...and in the middle of viewing, I got that horribly guilty feeling when I realized I never bought this for Kathy. I bought it for me! Uh-oh. I owe somebody another Christmas present, that's for sure! In the meantime, though, I am soaking up everything in Ann's workshop. She's a fun instructor with a great sense of humor. (The British accent doesn't hurt one bit.)
It was already my plan this year to move my collage to canvas. Her DVD is just the inspiration I need. Now all I have to do is feel better!
