Introducing Miss Creme BruLay!

When Kathy went in for her last hair styling appointment, I asked her to cancel the appointment I made for today (to have my hair buzz cute) because I thought I was going to lose my hair before today. As it turned out, I was right. However, somehow the cancellation didn't get recorded, because on Saturday they called to confirm.

I decided that this was Margie & Norm's way of getting me an easy appointment to get my wigs styled, so I kept it. I filled a shopping bag with wigs and drove to San Francisco.

Jennifer, our extra-fabulous stylist, said that first thing in the morning she remembered that we had an appointment. She felt like, "Oh, no" because it was probably going to be a sad time as she cut off my long, beloved hair. But the appointment turned out nothing like what she expected and we had a great time.

First, she did some clean up on my buzz cut, because I didn't do such a good job around my ears and in the back of my head. Then I would pull out a wig, try it on, and she would trim it where necessary. Because a number of the wigs are wild (and this is a salon of wild, drag queen wigs) she was very into it.

Going to a salon that employs lots of drag queens and has drag queen clients seems perfectly appropriate to me. This morning, I stopped for a moment in the middle of getting ready when I caught sight of myself in the mirror. I was in full makeup, dressed, but with no hair. I looked for all the world like a drag queen who was waiting to put on an enormous wig before heading out on stage!

Jennifer was kind enough to style all of these wigs for me:

  • The Revlon Bordeaux wig that I use as an everyday choice
  • The light blonde-and-golden blonde wig
  • The 60s pink flip wig
  • The metallic indigo bob
  • The long wig with frosty grape curls
  • A straight brown "faux Alix" wig

If you are getting a wig for whatever purpose, I highly recommend that you get the wig styled. Most wigs that come with bangs have them long for a reason-so that you can get them cut to suit your face. Some wigs, as we found, are not well cut in the first place and need to have the length evened out. A styled wig looks so much better on that I think that not styling it shouldn't even be an option.

I expressed my frustration over the stubbly hair that hasn't yet fallen out. It actually hurts my head, which I didn't expect. Jennifer told me that I can just shave my head with a lot of shaving cream and a razor. Yikes. I think I'm going to have to work up to that idea!

When we were done, Jennifer refused to accept payment for the appointment. That was very sweet of her, but I did feel guilty for having her style so many pieces. I would have brought fewer wigs if I knew she'd decline the money. When we parted, I had a bagful of fashion options and our spirits were both high from experience, so I'd say it was a good day indeed!
