It's always gonna be somethin'...

As we get Kathy's house ready to sell, one thing we decided to do was upgrade the appliances in the kitchen. That may sound radical, but the cooktop and oven were original to the house – which means, circa 1959!

I'd love to say that all of the past owners to exquisite care of these vintage appliances, but alas, that wasn't the case. The cooktop was a lovely retro mint green, but not all the electric burners worked, and age had taken its toll. The wall oven was best not examined too closely; Kathy wisely avoided it whenever she could during her tenure.

So, in a bid to attract the first-home buyer that we knew the house would be marketed to, we planned an overhaul of the appliances. Obviously, we had to choose economical options that still looked good and had acceptable features. It was a little tricky to find the right appliances because this is a small kitchen with no-longer-standard openings. Replacing the countertop made the cooktop choice a little easier, yet there was nothing we could do to expand our options for the wall oven. It had to be sized to fit the cabinet opening, and that was that.

Today Sears came to deliver the wall oven. Thank goodness, the installer had a habit of measuring first before taking the oven out of the truck, because I'm sure you know what happened. It wasn't going to fit! The width was fine, but it needed two more inches in the height that our cabinetry couldn't accommodate. Oh, no!

After checking the measurements, our resourceful installer took out his laminated appliance book and searched through it for any wall oven that would fit. I think there were three in total and the least expensive one was $200 more than the one we bought—that was $200 more on sale!

Who knew this oven would become such a problem to replace?

Sigh.
Well, there is nothing to be done about it except spend another half hour fussing with my spreadsheet to see what else in the budget will give. Thank goodness I fixed up our house before doing the makeover on Kathy's house, because now I'm used to these things. In home improvement, it's always gonna be somethin', I tell ya. It's always gonna be somethin'.
