The Kool-Aid Monster
Last night, over dinner, Kathy and I were watching TV. A preview for the return of Lost was going to air that hour, so we were actually paying attention to the commercials instead of whizzing past them, as I like to do. A commercial started that showed an overhead view of a small deserted island that was covered with tropical jungle. We paid attention, when bursting out of the jungle was...the Kool-Aid pitcher guy.
Kathy turned to me and said, "Maybe Mr. Eko was killed by the Kool-Aid Monster!"
I turned to her with big eyes, was silent for a moment. Then I burst into hysterical laughter. "Kool-Aid...monster?" I said, laughing hard. "He's a monster? Omigod, that would have totally changed my childhood if I thought he was a MONSTER!"
I don't know what happened but I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe. That smiley pitcher guy as a monster - the face of horror!
I remembered all the Kool-Aid I made as a young girl, mixing one packet to one cup of sugar (tooth decay time!)...thinking it was something happy and fun! And the popsicles we made in our freezer with Kool-Aid. Would I have made those if a MONSTER was promoting the drink?
Half an hour later, Kathy could hear me cracking up while I prepared dessert. ("Snort! Kool-aid MONSTER!") Even today, just the thought of "Kool-Aid Monster" cracks me up.
It's kind of like back when I worked at Sun Microsystems with my friend John. One day one of us brought in donuts. The other (see, I can't even remember which one of us did this) looked at the box. It was from "The Donut Basket" but one of us-probably me-misread it as, "The Donut Bastard." Okay, even now, when I type that, I start giggling. Donut Bastard! What kind of shop would that be? "I'm headed over to the Donut Bastard - want a bear claw?" Ha!
Next time you see me, all you have to do is say "Kool-Aid Monster!" or "Donut Bastard!" and you can make me giggle like an idiot. Pathetic, maybe, but also oh-so-true!
Moments like this remind me that life is good, indeed. Laugh more, feel better!
