Learning to Draw
My drawing books arrived in the mail yesterday - yay! I chose three of them:
How to Draw What You See by Rudy de Reyna - This one looked like it would provide me with the basics I need. Kathy looked at it and felt it would be useful for her, too. It starts with simple shapes and, honestly, we need that level of instruction. We have NO confidence in our drawing skills.
Drawing the Head & Figure by Jack Hamm - Ever since I've been a girl, I've always drawn people. Not like portraits, but figures. Of course, as a 12-year old, they were all busty, exotic-eyed women clothed in diaphanous (or what was meant to be diaphanous) space-age gowns. They weren't drawn very well, if I remember correctly, and I could have used Jack Hamm's book. This one offers a great reference for how to properly proportion facial features and bodies. I can't wait to start working with this book, but I need to work through How to Draw What You See first.
Lee Hammond's Big Book of Drawing by Lee Hammond - With a title like this, I ask you, who could resist? It's a big book - of drawing! I am intrigued by Lee's techniques and this compendium seemed a better starting point than her many other specific books. She does start out with using a grid over a photo to reproduce it, which may be cheating, but it's instant gratification for me right now. She also moves on to other details that I want to learn, like how to blend seamlessly and how to draw fur.
If you know of a cool drawing book, let me know about it.
I can't start on drawing just yet, as today I need to take my computer somewhere to be packaged and shipped. I found a place in Berkeley that specializes in shipping fragile and pricey items, so I will see what they can do. I hope it's not too hugely expensive. The shipping place is maybe 20-25 miles away, but wonder of wonders, it's down the street from the Dick Blick store! I'll get some canvas boards for Kathy, a sketch pad and some drawing pencils on the way home, and that should soften the blow of whatever I had to pay for my stupid computer.
Yeah, spending money to compensate for...spending money. Hmmm. Well, somehow it works out in my head!
