Ports O' Call

In the course of my travels, I've discovered ports that awe-inspiring wonders as well as hilarious, intoxicating distractions. Here are some of my favorites. I've broken them into two groups:

Blogs

Artist Blogs

Kelly Kilmer, Mixed Media Artist - Kelly is an awesome artist from Los Angeles. She teaches inspirational classes, especially in art journaling, all over the country. Check out her work and find out if you can take one of her classes.

Claudine Hellmuth - Claudine's whimsical collage style is distinctive and upbeat. She also teaches and has two books on collage, as well as instructional DVDs.

Journal Revolution - sisters Linda Woods & Karen Dinino are the authors of Visual Chronicles, a fantastic book on art journaling. Journal Revolution is their latest book. Find out what they are up to next!

Self-Growth and Personal Blogs

Lynne Morrell, Musings from the Edge - I actually know Lynne, unlike many bloggers whom I quietly stalk. Lynne is a gifted life strategies coach, LEAP practitioner, and EFT practitioner. She writes funny and insightful pieces on the process of emotionally freeing ourselves, something she knows a lot about.

Posie Gets Cozy - Alicia makes (and sells) lovely things from her home in the Pacific Northwest. I love the photos and stories she posts in her blog -- she captures the gentle life very well.

Crazy Aunt Purl - "The true-life diary of a thirty-something, soon-to-be-divorced, OCD knitter who has four cats. Because nothing is sexier than a divorced woman with four cats." I'm not a knitter and yet I love, love this blog. Laurie Perry is a gifted and insightful writer--even if you don't knit, check out her blog.

Yarn Harlot - Stephanie Pearl-McPhee is the author of several knitting books, none of which I've read because I don't knit. (My friend Sue would add: yet.) But the Yarn Harlot is very funny and makes me laugh anyway, especially when she shares stories from her family life. You'll see.

Dooce.com - Heather B. Armstrong's hysterically funny blog...even her bio cracked me up. Her blog is so popular that it seems almost silly to link to it, but I love it, so there ya go!

Entertainment/TV Blogs

Office Tally - I'm a big fan of the show The Office. If you are, too, you need Office Tally. It's where you find anything and everything you need to know about the show. Yeah, I like it that much.

Pam Beesley - Jenna Fischer's blog (she's the actress who plays Pam on The Office). Recently she was injured (her back was broken in four places!) so she may not be posting for a while, but I love to read her behind-the-scenes stories and her tales of shopping trips at Target. Because, you know, even if you're a hot up-and-coming actress, you can still want a good deal on a stylish bathroom mat.

More Sites (Non-Blog Sites)

Christine Thomas, Life Coach, Midwife of Dreams - Christine is an awesome coach living in Colorado who does coaching by phone. She has a unique blend of spirituality and practicality that is oh-so-needed in the coaching field. She'll follow your mythic journey like nobody else. I really recommend her.

More Fun Than I Can Stand

Improv Everywhere - This is one of those "How Come I Didn't Start This?" ideas. Charlie Todd, an improv actor, started gathering strangers together in New York City on various elaborate improv "missions." It's hard to explain -- just go see! The Best Buy Mission had me cracking up.

Found Magazine - Okay, so people find things in public places...like notes and photos and what-have-you...then send them to Found so that we can read them in the magazine (or online in the Find of the Day) and puzzle over them out of context and omigod it is so funny and ... and ... somehow I can't explain why. Go look.

How Much is Inside? - The folks at cockeyed.com take it upon themselves to answer the question "how much is inside" a keg, a pumpkin, Dial Complete soap, and much more! Think this can't be funny? Now I know you haven't checked it out. I want these people to be my new best friends. (They offer even more fun from their home page.)

Gallery of Regrettable Food - James Lileks presents food from the 1960s that we can't believe we ate. Great page design and images. (James has lots of stuff on his fabulous site, Lileks.com — don't miss The Dorcus Line of menswear!)

Happy Woman
- An online zine with the oh-so-compelling slogan, "We think so you don't have to!" The only thing sad about Happy Woman is that it is labled parody/satire in the title — you can just bet that's because too many people didn't get it.

Miss Abigail's Time Warp Advice - "Old Advice for Contemporary Dilemmas." A collector of antique and vintage advice books digs up hysterical answers to today's pressing problems from yellowed and brittle pages. Who can resist?

Me Own Sites

Sappho.com - Since 1995, the Isle of Lesbos has served as a tasteful cultural oasis for lesbian and bisexual women. The site features historical lesbian-themed poetry, classical art, letters between famous women, and vintage photos and postcards from my private collection.

That 70s Doll - A site for collectors of 6-1/2 inch Topper Dawn Dolls, popular in the early 1970s and now collectible. Includes resources for collectors as well as entertaining biographies, dioramas, and photo shoots.

Lola & Tilly: The Scoot N' Scamper Sisters - Yeah, yeah, yeah, you've seen web sites for cats and you just don't get it. But, I say, you haven't seen one like THIS. Find out about Lola's past as a poet and learn the story of the butt-less mouse!
