Locked Door Drama!

I brought out heating and AC guys today to repair some duct work and take a look at our furnace/AC system. It seems almost impossible to cool the house off in the warm months (also known as BURNING HOT months here in Concord, CA) and in the winter, the living room is always freezing. I was hoping they'd tell us if we had leaks in our vents or something.

What it turns out is that our furnace and AC unit is sized for a house less than half the size of ours. I kind of suspected that. Let's just say that every decision that the builders made on this 30 year old house is suspect, and the upgrades that the previous owner made tend to be...well...cut-rate. So this kind of thing is no surprise. The guy giving the quote had some really good ideas about options, so I'll look forward to seeing the quote.

Meanwhile, while the guys were working here, I closed the bedroom door keep the girls out of the way. I don't know how, but the door locked. I have never locked that door before, so it took me by surprise. Jiggling the doorknob, predictably, got me no where. I tried sticking a narrow screwdriver in the hole and turning it, but that didn't work, either.

The girls started to cry and yowl on the other side. "Mom can't get to us! We're all alone! Oh, no!" Poor dears were stuck with food and water and a litter box and a cat condo. AND NO MOM!

The longer I worked at it, the more frantic their cries became. Finally, I removed the doorknob altogether and turned the mechanism with my fingers. The door opened, the girls ran out to me, and the violin music began to play. MOMMMMEEEE!

Disaster averted! Mom saves the day. Whew.
