A New Look

Kathy had an appointment with our hairstylist yesterday and so I went along with her. My hair is way too short (I'd say less than 3/4 inches long) to do anything with, but I enjoy our stylist, so I thought it would be fun to tag along for a visit.

While Jennifer was working on Kathy's hair, I was complaining about how much I hate my own hair. It is dark gray, like pencil lead, all over. That's not my hair! I feel old in this color, as it doesn't flatter my skin tone at all. After listening to my whining, Jennifer looked at me with bright eyes and said, "Let's bleach it!"

Bleach it? My hair? I am the original dark hair girl; I've never bleached my hair in my life or even thought of coloring it blonde. But Jennifer was so excited at this prospect that I couldn't bear to be a curmudgeon about it. Besides, who cares-it is less than an inch long! Talk about short-term commitment. So, I agreed.

She started out by trimming my hair, which was a good thing. I know, why would you trim hair that is already so short? Thing is, it was growing at different speeds and looked bizarre. Plus, we decided to keep the sides short as it grows out so that the top can get longer and catch up with the sides. Then I can grow it all at once.

Once she trimmed it, she bleached it, washed it, and voila! Alix becomes Annie Lennox!

Me with teeny tiny bleached blonde hair

I will admit that I am having a hard time getting used to it. Kathy, Jennifer, and my friends like it, but I am still in that, "Um, is this me?" mode. I imagine I'll adjust after a while.

In the meantime, I am fascinated by all the hair growth that the bleaching stimulated. Within 24 hours of the hair appointment, I had tiny little dark dots all over my scalp as a new crop of hair is coming in. Back in the era when I used to get air-oxidized perms (yeah, scary) the same thing would happen - within two days of a perm, I could feel short little hairs growing all over my scalp. Am I the only one this happens to?

Well, the more hair the merrier on my head, so, yay!
