One Reason to Speak More Clearly
The other day, I was talking to a friend from the kitchen while she was in another room. I called out to her, "You know, I really have to do something about my laziness!"
There was a bit of a pause and then she called back, "In what way?"
"I'm just not getting enough done," I answered. "You know, my task list is a mile long, and..."
"OH!" she said, walking into the kitchen to join me. "You have to do something about your laziness. I thought you said labia."
I cracked up for what felt like several minutes, trying to imagine what would prompt anyone to say, "I really have to do something about my labia!" And to shout it across several rooms, no less!
I congratulated her on what a great response she had. "In what way?" was truly inspired, allowing her retain grace and composure in the face of my apparently outrageous person confession. We brainstormed all the things you can say when you don't know what heck someone is talking about, yet don't actually want to say, "What the heck are you talking about?"
"You do?"
"Say more about that."
"Why do think that?"
But maybe, sometimes, "What the heck are you saying, woman?!?" might the best response! Good thing I elaborated on my laziness, or who knows what my friend would imagine my problem to be.
