Pirates and Vampires
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the movie I've been waiting for, is in the theaters. Yay!
Kathy and I had tickets for the 11:59 showing last night. We arrived early because we knew we'd have to wait in line a long time. They had three showings within 10 minutes of each other, all sold out. We were pretty much surrounded by teenagers, many of them dressed at pirates. I was wearing my Captain Jack Sparrow head scarf, but wasn't really meant as a costume...I was just tired of wearing a wig. While seeing all the kids in costume was fun, I sort of wanted to shout, "Posers! I have no hair, I need this head scarf. I'll show you who the real pirate is!" And maybe rip it off! Of course, it would be a lot more effective if I had pirate hoop earrings in one ear.
I had been looking forward to the movie for over a year, but things didn't work out well for my first showing. My tummy was churning the entire time. I had to excuse myself to the Ladies room in the middle of the movie and missed at least fifteen minutes. I missed important scenes, of course, because, they are all important! The tummy cramps continued for the rest of the film, so it wasn't very enjoyable.
I had promised to email the nurse practitioner this morning to let her know if the diarrhea stopped. Of course, it hadn't. Because she was concerned about my getting dehydrated over the weekend, she made an appointment for me to go to the infusion center for IV fluids. Once she called with the info, I put on a metallic indigo bob and headed out the door. It took me an hour and fifteen minutes to get to San Francisco, which isn't bad, but, then they had me wait for an hour and fifteen minutes more because they were behind.
I was assigned a nurse who was new to the infusion center. Yep, she definitely was new, because she couldn't start an IV to save her life. It took a very long time, with lots of probing in my veins. Ick. I was looking away because I'm okay if I don't watch. When she finally got it started, she made a remark about how my arm was now a bloody mess. EW! EW! She asked if I wanted her to cover that up and I said yes, please. When I looked back at my forearm, it had medical tape all over it. What I could see was indeed a mess, leading me to mentally nickname her The Vampire.
I'm not sure what, but something about the way she set up the IV meant that it hurt like heck the entire time. What made that worse is that she programmed the machine to administer the fluids over a longer period of time, prolonging the pain. Last time it took an hour; this time she set it for two and a half hours. Supposedly, that's better for the patient, but OW.
I was very hungry after all the waiting and asked if volunteers were taking sandwich orders, but she couldn't find them. I wish I had brought food with me. She would get me a snack (I guess they have snacks somewhere) but she forgot about that.
By the time I got home, I was sporting a very creepy 5-inch bruise on my wrist. I think it makes me look either like a drug addict or someone marked for the Kraken. Good thing I live inland! From start to finish, the trip to the infusion center took seven hours. By the time I got home I was shaking from low blood sugar.
All in all, not the best day for me. Kathy and I are going to go to the movie again on Sunday so that I can see the whole thing. It will be the third time for her because today her company took the staff to the movies. Go figure, Kathy will have seen a Pirates of the Caribbean movie more times than me! Ah, well, I'll fix that soon enough.
