"Sleeps With Livestock"
As you may recall, I am a big fan of the cattle that graze in the open space behind my house. Often, I see them grazing in the rolling hills. On occasion, they graze right behind my house and I get to watch "the big boys" (as I call them) up close. I'll call out to Kathy, "They're behind the house! They're behind the house!" as I rush outside. You would think I'd never seen a steer before.
The one thing I've always wondered about, in typical City Girl style, is...where do they sleep at night? Do they ever sleep behind my house? I can't tell, because it's really dark at night. It's kind of a hallmark of nighttime, as I see it. Darkness, that is. How would I know if they were there? They are black cattle, after all. If I went walking out there at night, I might run into them! (That would be bad; I'm sure of it.)
So how do I know if they sleep out there? I had thought of going out in back with a high-powered flashlight some time to see if there are any big dark shapes in the grass, but aside from that seeming rude and pervy, it's seems pretty hit-or-miss. After all, they are often grazing elsewhere around sunset.
And so, for the past year, this has remained a mystery. That is, until today.
This morning I woke up very early, before the sun was up. I opened the drapes so that the girls could watch the birds outside. As the sky lightened, I saw three big black angus steer nestled together in the grass. One got up and started grazing, but the other two stayed down, enjoying a lazy Saturday morning.
I quickly calculated the distance from my bed and came up with less than two hundred feet. That's how close livestock were sleeping! Only a City Girl like me would think that's SO COOL.
Over coffee, I said, "Good morning, my friendly cattle! Happy grazing to us all!"
Such a dork. Heh!
