Target: Kitty Nirvana
Warning: Extreme Feline Cuteness to Follow
Ever tried to by a play structure or bed for your cat? Then you know how hard they are to please. Oh, it's easy to thrill them with a cardboard box and a twist-tie, but when you invest your hard-earned cash on something explicitly designed to be both safe and intriguing for the feline set, you're usually setting yourself up for disappointment.
That's why I was surprised to find that Target, of all places, has been consistently hitting home runs with just about anything we buy from their cat accessories section. Target? A source of safe, compelling, and affordable cat toys? Apparently so!
The first thing we tried was their nylon cat cubes, the kind that expand and collapse like those laundry baskets. I bought two sets and attached the four cubes together with the handy Velcro connectors. I didn't realize I was creating a MadCap Cat Raceway, but Tilly knew, as she quickly rocketed through while murmuring excitedly. Over the past year or so that it has been up (she doesn't tire of it) I've learned it handy location for ambushes. Ow.
A few months ago, we tried out the Jungle Gym. This one seemed ambitious and took a little while to assemble, so I was pretty sure it would be doomed. Nope. Lola started crawling over and examining it immediately. She knew exactly what to do with.
For the boys, we bought a CatnipLounger bed to replace the not-so-attractive cardboard box that they sleep in by a window. Kathy had barely removed it from the packaging when Dash was grabbing at it and trying to climb inside - still on the kitchen table. It didn't even have the catnip inside yet. He smacked his brother when Skee tried to climb in, and they are still battling for ownership. This is hardly their first cat bed, but certainly the most popular.
By this time, I was pretty sure that the head of the company that makes these for Target was named Fluffy Bumbkins or Mr. Bloomers.
When Kathy got a Kitty Dual Hammock for the boys, even my eyes turned green with envy. The bunk beds, as she calls them, are a bit of inspired genius. I saw the boys lounging on the beds contentedly and knew the girls had to have one, too. I picked up one this weekend and, in the middle of assembly, Lola crawled under the top piece to hide. I swore I could hear a conspiratorial chuckle. By the time I had it together, Lola had set up shop on the lower hammock and Tilly kept running by to smack the toy that dangles from one end.
It's no surprise, then, that this morning I woke up to this:
Target rules.
However, I must say that as happy as I am with their love for their Four Poster Princess bed, as it is known for the girls (totally not a boyish "bunk bed") it also worries me a little. You see, the only non-Target cat accessory I had that was accepted this well was Tilly's a circular jungle gym by Hartz. She loved it and would play with it daily, in adorable poses like this:
That's one happy kitty. Well, happy until mom tripped in one of those Lumbering Human accidents and, sadly, the jungle gym broke. To be honest, there were maybe four Lumbering Human accidents before the gym was deemed beyond repair. Hartz had discontinued the gym by then (and yes, of COURSE I checked eBay) and so it disappeared without replacement. Sad, sad kitty eyes watched me for a while.
So, while the kitties are happy again, I'm thinking I might swing by Target on my next round of errands and buy me some insurance. As I lug the Kitty Dual Hammock boxes to the counter, the cashier may wonder just how many cats I have, but that's okay. I've been a Crazy Cat Lady for a looooong time. At least I have happy kitties!
